Apple 2e Project

I can't really call this a repair, nor can I really call it a restoration, but it is an old computer getting things done to it, so it is, by that merit, a project. Have a look at this:

This is an Apple 2e, stylized as "//e" by Apple themselves, and it's got a few obvious problems, but thankfully not too many. This one was found by @PS2it who passed it over to me to monkey with.

The computer itself is missing a smattering of keycaps (though wonderfully, all the ALPS key switches are intact and working) and at first it wasn't booting at all.

Tried the Zenith monochrome monitor, and voila:

So it works and is in (relatively speaking) excellent cosmetic condition. Just need some new keycaps and we're on the road!

Another problem I found was that the floppy controller card would spin the floppy disk drive up to full speed and hold it there, while half of the keyboard wouldn't work. Unplugging the card "fixed" the keyboard issue- so I suspect it's got a short in it somewhere, a dead chip, or both. Not a huge deal at the moment though.

The unit looks especially good when paired up with a period-correct Apple monitor, in this case my "good" Monitor 2c.

Something neat, I found these little "artifacts" tucked into the vent slots toward the back of the machine, and it reveals that this particular unit likely spent some time in a school of some sort. Top piece says "Onyen" (or perhaps Onyer?) while the bottom are the page numbers for "Purification of Metals: Flame Tests" so I'd suspect this machine was being used in conjunction with a science education course- and someone bored tucked the shredded bits of their homework into the computer. Always fun to find little relics of a computer's past while working on them!
