Apple IIc Plus

In the late 80's, Apple updated the Apple IIc "portable" computer with some better performance, a 3.5" disk drive, and a built-in power supply. They're kinda hard to find these days as they weren't sold for very long toward the end of the Apple II's life span.

The good folks at PC Doctors in Marshfield WI (Thank you Mr. Pleet!) passed us this one which ahs seen some better days-and it's due for a deep clean and restoration!

Key caps came off fine. Nice that it's a mechanical keyboard and not some membrane contraption. It has a particular "funk" to it so that'll need a good cleaning.

The case could probably use a good retrobrite, the underside of the key caps are closer to what the original color had been.

These really are neat, it’s a shame they didn’t sell better. Out of the box these were the fastest of the Apple II line. Unfortunately, a majority of Apple II (not IIGS) software was on 5 1/4 inch disk, and this has a 3 1/2 inch drive. It just wasn’t really backward compatible, at least not without a external 5 1/4 inch drive.

I need to get mine out sometime. Maybe the next show!

Definitely! No idea what software would really show off the performance edge, but I'd imagine there's something out there. I'll readily admit I don't know very much about the Apple II software scene outside the few games I've played.

This particular unit has a lot of rust and corrosion on the floppy drive, so that could be an uphill battle getting that to run. The connector for the SCSI and external floppy aren't much better, so getting this one to do much of anything beyond BASIC might be tricky. We'll see though I suppose.

I’ve got some of those Apple II 3.5 inch drives if you need a replacement, otherwise the Apple2Online store usually has all kinds of parts for these.

Really interesting that Apple put a 3.5 inch drive in this machine. I remember watching an ad of sorts for the IIc+ where they showcase some of its features on YouTube. I know of a few software titles that were released on the IIGS that are on 3.5 disks.

I have a 3.5 disk drive for the Commodore 64 and 128 that was released in the 90s and can use 1.44MB disks. That one was always crazy to me too as I can’t think of too many 64 titles on 3.5 disks.

I'm glad to see progress on this machine. It was too unique to just sit on under the shelf because it was so rough. Hopefully you can find the missing keys for it.

I'm on the hunt now! I've got a line on a partial set, just waiting to hear back if it has all the keys I need included with it.

I don't remember if the IIgs shares the same switches, but if so, I have a bunch of IIgs keyboards I was using for parts. I can grab whatever keys you might need from those if you can't find them elsewhere.

We're only missing the "Option" and "A" keys. I'm not really sure if the keys are compatible or not.
