Apple IIgs (Obscure Upgrade Model from IIe)

Apparently I never posted this before, but it is for sure my top acquisition this year. Received by pure chance through a friend of a friend who was otherwise going to take it to an electronic recycling event 😲.

This is the rare IIG Upgrade Edition, which was an official Apple service and product line for IIe users after the IIgs came out. Very few went this route since it cost $500, required you to forfeit your IIe board, and then required buying additional compatible peripherals including the monitor. Most people recognized that they could just resell their IIe as a complete set and then use the money toward a new IIgs.

I have made some upgrades to it including an Ethernet/Uthernet card, 8MB RAM disk and a fresh-off-the-press SNES controller adapter. Which only really works for a game or two at the moment, it was developed in a collaboration of sorts with 8-Bit Guy's Apple port of his retro game PETSCII Robots. The first interior shot photo was before I made the upgrades (I also replaced the internal risky battery with a battery pack). The next is with the accessories and then showing it browsing Google News online :)

That is a very cool find! I used to have a few of the ROM 00 and early ROM 01 IIgs logic boards that had the keyboard and numpad connectors soldered to the board for the IIe upgrades. The later 01 boards had the provisions for them, but eventually, they were removed completely on the ROM 03 boards.

It sure is strange seeing that trapezoid mouse attached to an IIe!

I've heard of these, but this is the first time I've ever actually seen one. That is a treasure for sure!

Thanks for sharing!
