I.P. Address Connectivity

Can anybody answer? Since the I.P. number of a modem is different, what I.P. number do W.A.N. packets use when you connect a wireless router to the modem? I know the router assigns thru D.H.C.P. I.P. numbers to devices connected to it. In other words, the I.P. number of the router's device or the I.P. number of the modem the W.A.N. packets use for address resolution? I would think the modems. Then, the modem forwards the packet to the router for address translation. Again, how does the router know what device to send the packet since it has only the modem's I.P. number? Would you consider this a "firewall?"
