ROBOCUP 2022

RoboCup 2 is ON!

On Saturday, June 11th the WCC will be at District 1 Brewing (more specifically the rear area of the venue) at 200 Division Street in Stevens Point for the sequel to the original RoboCup event!

Unlike our library open house shows, this space permits us to buy/sell/trade. If you're looking to get things, offload things, or some combination of the two, this is your golden opportunity to do so. Likewise, we'll have plenty of things on display as usual, so there will be no shortage of interactive things for us and the general public to play with while there.

As with the last show, one facet will be a fundraiser event for the proposed RoboCop statue (old news HERE) though I'm still working out how to improve it from last time to make it even more engaging. The "high score" challenge worked, but I'm thinking we might want something more direct. I'll have more on this shortly.

Dates and times: June 11th, 2022, District 1 Brewing in Stevens Point, WI. Exhibitor/vendor setup at 10AM, doors open at 11AM, Stevens Point Robo-Cup starts at noon.

Mark your calendars and get ready for what I feel will be our biggest and best show yet! See you there!

For those from out-of-town or who don't venture up to the north side too often, this is District 1 Brewing.

I'll try and get some photos of the interior, it's pretty nice inside!

Count me in! Also, I never knew that Peter Weller was from Stevens Point! Super interesting to know. Anyways, I really like the high score challenge to raise funds! In terms of more ideas on how funds could be raised for the statue, it may not be vintage/retro, but RoboCop is a guest character in Mortal Kombat 11. There could also be a tournament for MK players. Otherwise, there could also be other challenges that people could enter in. Maybe a variety of different retro games that could have players try to beat each others scores? People could pay for each play to try and beat a score. By the end of the event, there could be a prize for the player with the highest score for each game. Maybe it's worth a shot to possibly reach out to Peter Weller? Just tossing ideas out! Can't wait :)

For the "tournament" part of the show I'm really torn on either making it a timed "high score" challenge (that's what we did last time, and it worked okay), or running an actual bracket where people sign up in advance. We could in theory do both, just need to figure out how to make it "work."

I did reach out to Weller's agent some time ago, and haven't heard anything back as of this writing- though as I understand that's not really unusual. I understand he is on the Cameo video platform, so we might be able to get a statement from him (maybe) but I don't know. That's actually on my to-do list for this upcoming week, so we may get lucky yet!

So as of right now, we're leaning pretty heavily towards using RoboCop 3 for the Genesis as the game for the event. While it does share some of the same problems of the first game (notably it's difficulty), it is a game we can run both or original hardware and seamless emulation, depending on what people might prefer. This also gives us a little more safety net in the event the console or cart stop working for some reason- better to have a fallback than not I figure.

A long play of that game is HERE on YouTube for those interested. Don't let the clip fool you, whoever is playing is very, very good at this game.

The trophy is coming along nicely.

As before, we'll have table space for both buying/selling but also displays. I'm still narrowing down what all will be coming, and I'll have the kit for this one "scalable" so I can fill any gaps, or pack things up if anyone else needs more room. As always, if anyone needs monitors, cables, TV sets, cables, converters, etc. let me know and I'll get it in the kit for the show, so I can get it to you straight away.

Thanks all! More details to come!

Alright, news time!

This news may be subject to change a little, but we're getting ready to rumble here!

District 1 will be opening their doors at 11AM on Saturday, June 11th. I've proposed that we use their back door, and then set up for the show in the back third of the venue, officially "opening" the show at 12PM.

My siblings and I will run the RoboCup booth itself, and I'll have quite a few of the "usual suspects" set up as exhibits. I'll also have a table of freebie stuff for those interested, either in picking things up or getting rid of some things. Additionally, if you would want to buy/sell/trade, you're more than welcome to!

District 1 has more power outlets than any establishment I've ever visited before, so there shouldn't be any problems there. I'll bring the full kit of cords and cables, but we should be pretty well set to go with the power already there.

The only "issue" we might have are tables. District 1 has a lot of bench and picnic table style arrangements, which might not work for some setups. If you need a table, let me know, and we'll get one arranged for you.

Masks are optional, food and drink carry ins are permitted, and they have a full bar. They also have a whole set of classic arcade games and a whole wall of pinball machines, so there's no shortage of stuff for absolutely everyone to do.

I'll get the advertising engine rolling full throttle, and we'll make this the best show yet!

Hey all, as a heads up, we have some extra space available, so if anyone knows anyone else who might want to be an exhibitor at the show, feel free to let them know.

If anyone needs anything for your space at the show, let me know while I've still got time to get stuff shipped in!

As talked about on Facebook, the prototype arrived recently!

I'll level with you all, this is actually a mouse pad, but quite a few people thought it was an embroidered patch. So I've reached out to another merch-making shop, and I'll get this cooked up as a patch too! I'll keep you posted as those progress.

We will have plenty of the red stickers and buttons for the show though!
