I generally really like eBay but this latest kerfuffle has been a really sour one.
I bought an 8TB hard drive to back up all my video files, and opted to try the Seagate as I've been burned on Western Digital in the past. The drive I got didn't seem to work, so I thought I'd crack it open to see what was up. First red flag, it was glued shut. So after cracking it open, I discovered that it's got a 250GB Western Digital hard drive in there from 2015. I paid just about $200 for an HDD that's a decade old and a fraction the size that doesn't even work.
The seller has "no idea" how this could have happened. But pretty quickly offered to refund "half" the price. By that point I'd reached out to eBay about it, and it's pretty well settled there. The whole thing is just bizarre. If this is a scam, it's a pretty clunky one- but I kinda doubt the guy who sold it had "no idea" what's going on. I spoke with another member, and they suggested that maybe the firmware on the puny HDD was messed with to make it "look" like 8TB, but that seems like the sort of thing that would be discovered pretty quickly too. Just plain weird.
