The "I'm New Here" Thread

Perhaps we might want a thread for folks to say hi and introduce themselves. I'm new here (Hi!) so will try starting it off.

I just found WCC via the RoboCup coverage. I live in Stevens Point and while I like all sorts of vintage computers, I only collect IBM-brand ones. (Gotta set some limits for myself!) When I started collecting, I also thought it would be wise to mostly concentrate on portable computers since that takes less space. Well, that's great in theory, but as we all know, some of these old portable/luggable computers aren't especially small, like my IBM Portable 5155. :) Those criteria mean I have mostly early Thinkpads but I'm not 100% strict and also have some IBM Model 25s, a PS/1, etc.

Even within Thinkpads, there are a lot of neat models available--the famous butterfly keyboard model, tiny ones, models that could strap directly to overhead projectorts, ones with internal inkjet printers and so forth. I've got several cool ones, but plenty more yet to find!

holy cow ... Stevens Point. it's amazing how people can live almost anywhere these days. bottom of the ocean, edge of an active volcano, Stevens Point ...

hello from the south side of the street (opposite the Triple-U.S.P.)

[QUOTE="zorlof : you'll find many fellow neighbors on here/QUOTE]

it was a surprise to find so many mentions of Stevens Point while looking around various posts.

it also looks like I just missed a gathering at the triple-U SP !

thanks Zorlof !

BTW - are you now, or have you ever been, a professional stage magician ? you have the perfect name for it ! "The Amazing Zorlof". money is being left on the table if you aren't capitalizing on this !

Ha! I prefer "Magnificent" ...

It's actually the same as the name of a word processor for TRS-80 computers:

Hey everyone!

My path with electronics began as a child of the 70's who would fix radios, TVs, stereos, etc. I became hyper-focused on modern technology after seeing an Atari 2600 for the first time in 1979.

After making decent money in the mid-90's, I started collecting all those gadgets and computers I/we couldn't afford when I was a child. This was the early days of the Internet, as well as eBay, so suffice it to say I got a little carried away with all the fantastic deals! Let's say I was a hoarder before that was a common term.

Fast forward 30 years where I have hundreds of items that have been hauled from home to home, most of which nobody other than me has laid hands on (well, until the Marathon Historical Society event last month).

I honestly only have a vague idea of what's in my collection at this point, so started an inventory project a few months back to finally get this beast under control. I'm looking forward to sharing what I find with club members and the world at large.

I'm also in the process of re-building the soldering skills I was trained on back in my Navy days. I've since expanded from through-hole to surface-mount repair, and hope with continued practice, I can become the skilled electronics repair tech I was back then so I can help rescue gear from the e-waste bin (as well as give me something to do when I retire in a few years).
