The SEGA Master System

Released in 1986, this was SEGA's first major foray into home video gaming in North America- taking direct aim at Nintendo and their runaway success with the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It didn't sell nearly as well in America as it did in Europe and Japan, but lit the fire of the "console wars" in earnest leading into the 1990's. It's a curious, and now oddly hard to find piece of hardware that I've had my sights on for a while... and very recently, I got lucky. :D

With a little help from the folks over at Gaming Generations on Point's north side, I've got six games, two controllers, and a working system:

Well, mostly. A few of the games aren't working (I'm sure they need some serious cleaning, it has been close to 40 years now), and one of the controllers needs a rehab... but we've got a Master System now to go head-to-head with the NES in the "Console Wars" display.

This is going to be awesome!

Can it play doom?
If you count the heavily modded 8-Bit "Doom" demo than maybe. Generally speaking 8-Bit machines just don't have the horsepower to play something like Doom. As I said, this machine is comparable to the original NES.
