Many thanks to @DeanG for the heads up on this one- we were able to save this Macintosh SE SuperDrive from the scrap heap. Unfortunately we didn't get to it before the battery went kaboom.

After a good cleaning, I have a theory about the white solidified gunk on the board- I wonder if that wasn't the "guts" of that deformed axial cap that's burst- the board underneath didn't look nearly as bad as if it had been battery acid caked on there.









Still very rough though. It may yet be fixable, but it's going to be a challenge for whoever takes this on on.
