IBM 5160 XT PC

Some time ago, @PS2it passed a rather battered, weary IBM 5160 XT computer over to me to see what I could do with it. While I'll readily admit that PS2it is more skilled than I am when it comes to repairing old IBM PCB's and components, it seemed that it was just heinously dirty both inside and out- and that's definitely something I can tackle! 😁

Complete with spiders!

The whole case is battered and covered in quite a bit of rust. The volume of rust on the bottom to me at least indicates this thing sat in some water for a while at some point, though the standoffs for the PCB kept it high enough off the bottom that it seems to have survived, at least at a glance.

I did actually try this power supply. Unfortunately, no life from it or the board when the two were connected. I figure I'll have to swap in a different PSU to finally test the board. It's been a little while now, but I think the board will work.

Or they better. It took a long time to get these boards this clean! 😉

I have a few pictures of the case, though I'm missing all of my "before" photos at the moment. When I find them I will post them.

Not a ton I can do about the deformations in the metal, though I can do something about the rust, and of course give it a good coat of paint when the weather gets a hair nicer in the next couple weeks. There is some physical damage to the front of the case as well, but it's not disasterous, nor beyond repair. More photos to follow! :D
