JVC Video Capsule TV

This is an oddball project I've had waiting for a while, but the time has come! Before Covid came down, with the help of the folks over on the Flip Clock Fans Forum, I bought this vintage 1972 JVC Video Capsule, the precursor to the better known JVC Video Sphere. The pyramid-shaped Video Capsule combines two things I love- weird old clocks, and weird old TVs into one delightfully strange package.

I believe it was white or cream colored when it was new, so that's kinda scary.

From there, the whole upper half of the unit "flips" open to reveal the CRT hiding underneath. It's a simple, well-balanced mechanism that's very easy to push up and into place where it "sets" into place.

Inside is a 6" Black and White picture tube. The unit plays it's AM/FM radio when "closed" and operates the TV when "open" automatically, while the clock keeps time continuously- complete with an alarm and sleep timer, so it's a full-featured flip clock too.

When I got this one, there was no life at all when I plugged it in, so I set it aside for "someday" and that was that. Until now!

Turns out, the power cord had been yanked on at some point hard enough to physically break it off just inside the case, but thanks to a beefy strain relief, it still held out. I built a Frankenstein cord out of some spares and reattached that, and... it just works. The picture isn't very bright (I had to cut the main lights to get this picture) and the speaker makes a lot of noise, but we now have another crazy cool old TV ready to go to the next show!

I'll probably stick "Pong" on it as that's one of very few games that's still playable/passable on a screen this small and fuzzy. We shall see!
