Show ideas post MGC

I just got back from the immense Midwest Gaming Classic show in Milwaukee. The Wisconsin Computer Club was offered a table for a display set if I agreed to volunteer, and I agreed to give it a go. It was a tremendous learning experience; it's not every day one gets the chance to learn from a show several orders of magnitude older and grander than anything we've put on so far.

I'll be listing some of my notes here in this thread both for any discussion on them or further ideas. No particular order, feel free to shoot me down if I've got things all backwards. ;)

First up! Tournaments!

I love competitive gaming events. Even if the players aren't "pros" it's exciting for players to be "in the spotlight" and for spectators to watch something live unfurl. I think this is an experience that a lot of folks would enjoy, maybe not at our library format shows, but possibly at some larger events we're working toward- I still want to have RoboCup III this year!

MGC hosted tournaments a number of ways, but one method they had to quickly run players through was to run them as "king of the hill" style. Two players come up, and each round the loser is eliminated, replaced by a new challenger. Whoever remains at the end of the gauntlet is the champion. Whoever survived the most rounds also wins a prize. Certainly easier than brackets, timers, and all the other things we had to manage.

I'll run one at LincCon for sure, and at any shows that permit the format. 😃
