A cool guy in Stevens Point reached out to me (and by proxy the club) about a "big and old" Betamax player. I love old, weird, dead media formats and I'm still thinking it would be fun to roll some old media stuff out to a show sometime, so I agreed to grab it. The unit itself is a Sony SL-5000 Betamax player which unfortunately has a lot of dead caps that prevent it from operating- this sounds like a pretty common problem, and a straightforward issue to fix. The SL-5000's significant claim to fame is that it's the "first" front-loading VCR ever, which from a historical standpoint, is pretty neat!
Other odd features include the manual channel tuning controls under the top panel, a "switch" for recording, a mini audio jack for audio out on composite, and perhaps most wild, integrated handles. I don't know exactly when Sony dug in and stopped building handles into their TV's, but the idea they had handles built into their VCRs once is wild to me.
More info on this device HERE.
I'm hoping to work on this one over the winter months, more to follow!
